We Deserve Honesty
Keith Fitzgerald OPPOSES “Double-Dipping”
I have spent my life in public service. There was a time when you could be proud to say you were a public servant. Unfortunately, my opponent - who has sought public office for more than six years - disagrees, and impugns the honor and dignity of public employees around our state and our country.
My opponent has implied that there is something corrupt about working two state jobs, since I am a professor at a public university and also serve in the state legislature. She has also accused me of supporting the practice of “double dipping,” where state employees are allowed to retire and then return to employment, collecting both a regular paycheck and their pension check.
I do not support this practice. In fact, the vote that my opponent cites in her attack ad was on an amendment, not passage of the bill. I opposed the amendment because it did not include a tougher provision that would have ended the most egregious cases of double-dipping by prohibiting someone from collecting a pension check while employed in a job that pays $100,000 per year or more. Although I did not think the bill went far enough, I did vote for it because it was at least a step in the right direction.
